The Test of Time
Art Collector #102 OCT - DEC 2022
Artist Kylie Stillman and galleriest Christopher Hodges tell us the single most important thing about their 18-year relationship that has given it longevity.
Christopher Hodges: Her clarity…
When a young Kylie Stillman modestly mentioned she had an exhibition at Platform Art Space (Flinders Street Station underpass), I had an idea of her work but when I saw it in the flesh, I got it! I called her immediately and told her once the exhibition was finished to send it all to Sydney and I would look after it, that was 2004 and we have been working together ever since.
Kylie is an absolute pleasure to represent, she is an artist with a clear vision, who simply does her work. Beyond that, our friendship is firmly based on a very down to earth view of the artworld and the importance of being true to yourself. It’s lovely to have a friend who understands what you do.
Kylie Stillman: He just gets it…
Living in different cities means our communication has been mostly by phone. Christopher is always available and brilliant when it comes to advice. He’s an artist as well as a gallerist so when it comes to what artists’ need, he just gets it. I pick up the phone sometimes just to share a part of my studio day, if he is in the gallery we can chat through any new projects, but what I most enjoy are the phone conversations when he is in his studio, artist to artist, he’ll answer my call, just before he turns down the music he blasts, and talk about our shared interest in making and how lucky we are to have studio time.

The forests of the Dandenong Ranges are intimately woven into the threads of the local community. 'For the Love of Trees' delves deeply into this myriad of experiences, reminiscences, and imaginings. Into the past, present and future of the forest. It is at once an immersive art experience, a curated exhibition and an invitation to participate.

National Works on Paper
‘Mud Print’ is currently on exhibition at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery's National Works on Paper Prize from 5 December 2020 - 21 February 2021
Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery
The shortlisted work explores the textural quality of paperback books, and draws a quiet parallel between leaves in nature and the leaves of a book.
The carved work represents a found leaf pattern a powdered red grime mark on the footpath. The result of a dust storm 500kms away, driven by fierce winds before falling from the sky during a deluge of rain, the aftermath of extreme weather during summer 2020.

Isolate with Linden
The Linden New Art team is happy to share some great links and art activities with you during the closure of the gallery.
Kylie Stillman’s solo exhibition The Opposite of Wild was shown in 2017 at Domain House in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens, while our Acland Street home was being renovated. We asked Kylie what she had been working on recently and what had been keeping her entertained and motivated over the recent weeks.
“Isolation for me has had me yearning for everything audio. The need to be on screens to communicate for work and learning had me reach for Bluetooth headphones and speakers and flood the house and studio with music, audio readings and conversation. Here are my three loves that are getting me through:
Dan Fox has released a makeshift audio recording of his book ‘Limbo’; the work has been great to revisit in the current climate of isolation:
